Jules (1872-1932), Louis (1874-1946), and Henri (1876-1956) Séeberger form the first generation of the line of photographers known as the Séeberger brothers. They first gained attention through amateur competitions and were published in various magazines as well as by postcard publishers. In 1909, their career took a decisive turn. With the official establishment of their family business, “Séeberger Frères,” a commission for the magazine La Mode pratique marked their debut in fashion photography. This field quickly became their specialty, and they were soon in demand by all the French haute couture houses, such as Chanel.
Although they later photographed the French countryside and its holiday resorts, their main subject remained Paris and its inhabitants. With great sensitivity, they set out to capture, from a perspective that is both aesthetic and documentary, the old districts and their residents, as well as the fashionable gardens and their elegant ladies—crystallizing in fascinating images the period we now call the Belle Époque.
This publication accompanies the exhibition Revoir Paris. Paris through the lens of the Séeberger brothers (1900-1907), on view from February 15 to June 22, 2025, at Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography in Amsterdam.
